The Registers of the Ephrata Community
                                    by Julius F. Sachse

List prepared by Judith Cox Whipple

[The following names and comments are from: "The Registers of the Ephrata Community" by
Julius F. Sachse in _Pennsylvania Vital Records: from the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine
and the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography,_ Volume 1, pp. 163-178. (Baltimore:
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983.)

From Mr. Sachse's introduction: "Probably no community... has excited more interest and
speculation than the old Sabbatarian congregation on the banks of the Cocalico in Lancaster
County, known as the "Ephrata Community"... It is doubtful if anything like a systematic
church record was ever kept in the Community, as they were divided up into three separate
organizations which really had but little connection with one another, except as to the mode
of baptism and the keeping of the seventh day holy. In a systematic search... it was the good
fortune of the writer to find a copy of the death register of the Community. This consists of
three parts, the first... relates to the secular congregation at large, or it may be said the
"German Seventh-Day Baptist Congregation." The second relates to the Brotherhood that lived
in the monastery... The third part... relates to the Sisterhood of the order of "Spiritual
Virgins." [in the convent]."

WHAT FOLLOWS IS THE "REGISTER" OF THE FIRST PART:
                              THE SECULAR CONGREGATION.

The author has noted relationships with comments such as [B.9]. This indicates Brother
number 9 in the author's second list which is not reprinted here. Please see the original
article for more information.]
