Honoring the Lord Jesus Christ through special care services is an important ministry of the Church of the Brethren. The following Retirement Communities, Homes, Independent and Assisted Living facilities have a special relationship with the Church of the Brethren through the Fellowship of Brethren Homes. Most offer a wide range of care and support services to residents in a secure environment, yet with the freedom to explore and develop their life potential. The Church of the Brethren has a long history of caring for their members. Annual Conference stated in 1857 that: "A member of the church should not be put into the poor house if it can be possibly avoided." Most facilities are now open to the general public with a commitment to minister to the spiritual, intellectual and emotional needs of their residents, as well as their physical needs. Residents usually have access to private cottages or skilled nursing care, dietary services, group activities, private therapy, libraries, computer classes, housekeeping, laundry services, and the freedom from outside maintenance and equipment repair. Chaplain visitation is available in most communities and several have their own group worship area. In at least one case the worship service is televised and cabled throughout the complex. Rich years of enjoyment await residents in this type of a sheltered environment.
