    You are very welcome to join our discussions on the COB-L / COB-YYA mailing lists. If you are wondering, "What's a mailing list?", here's a brief description: When you subscribe to a list, you add your e-mail address to a group of people who receive mail from a single address. For our example, when I send mail to cob-l@bridgewater.edu it gets distributed to everyone who is currently subscribed to the COB-L list. You can unsubscribe at any time and not receive the messages. You can re-subscribe and start getting the messages again -- but you'll have missed out on the discussion while you were gone. How much mail you will get from a list often depends on what is being discussed at the time.

    The COB-L list is open to all and we cover a very wide range of topics. There are about 300 people currently subscribed, with about 30 people who post on a regular basis. We average about 10 messages per day on this list.

    The COB-YYA list was created primarily for the Youth and Young Adults. It is also open to any topic, and is often cyclical with the passing of the college semesters. We've had good representation from most of the colleges, several of the District camps, General Board staff, and several youth pastors. It's a great place to meet again after national youth and young adult conferences! There are currently about 160 people subscribed to this list and we average about 5 messages per week.

Subscription Procedures

Important Note: As is true with most list servers, the subscribe/unsubscribe commands are sent to one address and regular daily posts are sent to another address. Additionally, there are a few servers that do not understand e-mail that is received in HTML format, so if all else fails, set your e-mail client to send in plain text.

To Subscribe:

Send an e-mail to: listserv@bridgewater.edu with the words SUBSCRIBE COB-L in the BODY of the message, along with your name. If you're subscribing to the COB-YYA list, simply substitute where it's obvious!
For example: (case insensitive) subscribe cob-l john doe subscribe cob-yya mary smith

To Unsubscribe:

Send an e-mail to: listserv@bridgewater.edu with the words UNSUBSCRIBE COB-L in the BODY of the message. Likewise, if you are unsubscribing from COB-YYA, substitute COB-YYA for COB-L.
For example: (case insensitive)

     unsubscribe cob-l
     unsubscribe cob-yya

To Send messages to the list:

Send your e-mail to: COB-L@BRIDGEWATER.EDU or COB-YYA@BRIDGEWATER.EDU

To change your e-mail address on the list:

If you are changing providers, subscribe to the list with your new e-mail address, and then when the mail starts coming through your new address; unsubscribe from the list with your old address. This will result in double messages for a short period of time, but that is much better than "no" messages. Please do not forget to unsubscribe from the list with your old address or the administrator will receive bounced messages from the old provider, and not know what to do with them. Netiquette & Protocols

    Most list participants are very helpful and caring persons, however while we are pretty tolerant of others' views, we really get no joy from active toleration of petty bickering. 'Nuf said.

    We like to have people sign their submissions and--at least for the first few times you post--some idea of who you are and where you hail from.

    Quoting of the entire message you are replying to should be avoided. Succinctly sum up the previous message, as most of us just read it also.

    We also ask that if you use "carbon-copy" or "forwarded" messages do so with extreme moderation. If you send attached files, please send them to a person's private e-mail address and NEVER to the list-server.

    The Internet is often inundated with warning about this or that virus, some scary thing happening here or there, etc. Please check with the List Administrator before posting non-COB-related items.

    All Netiquette Offenders will be forgiven.

Administration

Please direct system questions, matters of appropriateness, or complaints to the list administrator. If there is no response within a couple days or so, redirect your concern to the backup administrator.
