Brethren List Server Archives

This list server is administered by Joe Bosserman through services provided by RootsWeb enterprises. It originally went online in May of 1996 with the idea of allowing Brethren historians and genealogists to freely share information. Messages from this list are also received by several BBS's located in various states. Although it is a private and moderated list, everyone is welcome to join this conference for the specific discussion of Brethren history and genealogical research. If you are interested in learning how to subscribe, just following the list server and etiquette instructions at Brethren Genealogy

Archives of these discussions are compiled in a monthly 'digest' type of form, and you may FTP download each monthly file separately. They are in a self-extracting PK zip format, so that it will automatically expand when the file name is typed at the DOS command line, or double-clicked in Windows File Manger. Need additional help? Please see the Instructions below.

Instructions

Each monthly digest file is a basic DOS ascii TXT file that has been compressed into a PK-Zip format, and then structured as a self-extracting binary executable Zip program, so that it will extract the inner TXT file automatically. Follow these handy instructions for Windows 3.x / Win95 / DOS.

Select a monthly digest file in Zip form
Decide which monthly Zip program file you would like to download, and single click on the disk icon or the name of the month. This will engage a download procedure from an FTP server. This is a 'file within a file.'

Download Zip file to hard drive
When the browser 'download dialog box' requests a target directory, use basic Windows functionality to locate a preferred directory in which to receive the Zip program file. Remember where you save it, because you will need to locate this file after downloading.

Extract text file from Zip file
After downloading a 'file within a file,' you must now extract the actual TXT text file by double-clicking on the name of the downloaded Zip program file (Windows 3.x + File Manager / Win95 + Explorer), or by directly typing the name of the file at the DOS command line. Although each Zip file is DOS based, it will also open in Windows utilities such as WinZip.®

Open the digest text file in editor
If you are using Windows95, start WordPad from the Accessories Group and open this huge, extracted DOS ascii digest text file. However, Windows 3.1, Notepad "will not" open files over 32 K in size. You will need to get a large text editor such as UltraEdit® because it will open; any file (text or binary), any size, and will open multiple documents until memory runs out. It's a paradise for 'clip&paste' users. Ninety-five percent of this web site was done in UltraEdit®.
