  "PHISHING" FOR YOUR IDENTITY

Internet scammers casting about for people's financial information have a new way to lure unsuspecting victims: They go "phishing." Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to deceive you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security number, passwords, or other sensitive information.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), phishers send an email or pop-up message that claims to be from a business or organization that you deal with - for example, your Internet service provider (ISP), bank, online payment service, or even a government agency. The message usually says that you need to "update" or "validate" your account information. It might threaten some dire consequence if you don't respond. The message directs you to a Web site that looks just like a legitimate organization's site, but it isn't. The purpose of the bogus site? To trick you into divulging your personal information so the operators can steal your identity and run up bills or commit crimes in your name.

Please use caution in responding to emails that are requesting an action on your part.

  A PLACE APART

Photo of man walking through the woods District Board calls Southern PA District Congregations and Individuals to pledge seed money for a new ministry, "A Place Apart."

For the past few years in his travels around the country as Annual Conference Moderator Elect and then as Moderator, Paul Grout has been in conversation with many people who have expressed three basic hungers in their lives. They hunger for: community, meaningful work, and a slower pace of life.
As a result of Paul's discussions and his personal soul searching and prayer, a strong vision of a place to meet these needs has emerged. Paul expresses this vision as "A Mission in the wilderness to seek in every aspect of its existence to be a place apart, where a new way of living, the new way of being alive introduced by Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit can be experienced and participated."
This vision is truly beginning to take shape. All District churches have been invited to become "First Hope Partners" in this venture called "A Place Apart." The goal of the advisory committee, working with Paul, is to have 10 congregations join this effort by committing to give $2,000 toward the project ($1,000/2003 and $1,000/2004). So far, Bermudian, Madison Avenue and Waynesboro have made the commitment. Individuals or congregations who wish to contribute are also appreciated.
Paul has been in conversation with several young adults who are eager to provide leadership for such an undertaking.
An advisory committee, appointed by the District Board, has been meeting with Paul to work out specifics of the venture. Committee members include Larry Dentler, Alice Bower, Richard Godfrey, John Layman, Harold Yeager, and Joe Detrick as the District Staff liaison.
If you want to receive more information or have questions about "A Place Apart," contact anyone on the advisory team. If you or your church have not yet committed to this project, please give it your prayerful consideration. Contact the District Office to inform them of your decision to participate. We thank you for your support.

FOR THE CHURCH BOARD

For Church Boards examining their liability factors, the District Library has a copy of The Alban Institutes book, "Safe and Secure." This guide helps identify risks and develop strategies for minimizing a congregation's liability and ensuring the safety and security of its members and visitors. From his unique perspective as a pastor and former detective, author, Jeffrey W. Hanna outlines issues, offers solutions to common problems, and helps readers assess their congregation's risks. Topics discussed include: handling money, building maintenance and security, personnel practices, and various types of criminal and civil liability.
