Responsibilities

The District Board shall:

  • Recognize the trust given to you by those who chose you; covenant to share in the responsibility set for the Southern PA District Board.
  • Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy, Spirit, the guidance of the scriptures, the "pulse" of the District, and the needs of the District as well as the wider church and community.
  • Work as a team member and refrain from acting individually and independently.
  • Aim for accountability for yourself and advocate accountability for other members of the Board.
  • Expect to be provided with sufficient background material for making responsible decisions, and be willing to read, study, listen, and participate in making those decisions.
  • Accept and abide by the decision of the majority while reserving the right, on occasion, to attempt to persuade them to a different point of view.
  • In the midst of the many immediate and urgent demands, do some spiritual "whittling" -- pause for deeper thought, pray for vision, evaluate both the moment and the issues.
  • Become a prepared and enthusiastic interpreter of District program when the opportunity arises. Sometimes make the opportunity!
  • Affirm the strength of the District; work to deal with the weaknesses; respond openly to the criticism.
  • Keep handy for reference--the Bible and the District Constitution and By-Laws. Regularly read the District newsletter, Messenger, and Agenda, as well as books and publications that might provide information and/or inspiration.
  • Make District Board and Commission meeting dates a priority on the calendar. Be there!
  • Offer support and counsel to the District staff and to each other.

The Commission of Ministry:

  • The Commission on Ministry, the majority of members being ordained ministers, shall give guidance and supervision of the work of set-apart ministry in the District.
  • Provide training for local church ministerial committees and assist in maintaining good church-minister relationships.
  • Encourage and assist churches in calling people into the Christian ministry.
  • Counsel all persons prior to commissioning, licensing, and ordaining.
  • Administer the student loan fund for the District.
  • Develop-and promote growth opportunities for ministers. Promote support groups for ministers.
  • Seek to strengthen the health of marriage and family relations of ministers.
  • Comply with the Brotherhood policy regarding periodic review of the District ministerial lists.

The Commission of Church development & Revitalization shall:

  • Plan for new church development projects.
  • Give oversight to beginning fellowships and select leadership for such.
  • Appoint a steering committee for each project which will give guidance and support to the project and its leaders.
  • Help develop budgets for the new project.
  • Oversee, when called upon, the revitalization of existing churches within the district.
  • Survey the district to discover areas for new church growth and development.

The Commission on Witness:

  • The Commission on Witness shall be responsible for directing and undergirding the congregations as they reach out in service to the entire world.
  • Encourage the work of evangelism by providing training and resources for local church leaders.
  • Emphasize the outreach of the Church of the Brethren through the Brotherhood Fund.
  • Inform persons of all ages of service opportunities and actively recruit youth and adults for Brethren Volunteer Service.
  • Participate in efforts to feed the hungry, assist the homeless, and provide spiritual, social and material aid for persons with special needs.

The Commission on Nurture:

  • The Commission on Nurture shall promote the total cause of Christian Education in the District and shall stimulate the congregations to have a vital encounter with God.
  • Provide training opportunities on the District level.
  • Make curricula available for examination.
  • Provide audio-visual and library resources.
  • Participate in ministries to students through United Ministries in Higher Education.
  • Appoint and give direction to committees on: Aging, Youth, Adults, Christian Education Development, Marriage Enrichment, History, and Genealogy interests.
  • Work with the Pennsylvania Council of Churches in securing, supervising, and supporting chaplains in state parks and in other leisure ministri

The Commission of Stewards shall:

  • Encourage the churches and District agencies to be faithful stewards of God's resources.
  • Promote a program of stewardship education and enlistment in the churches.
  • Supervise the financial interests of the District.
  • Safeguard and utilize the property of the District. (See note below)
  • Report regularly to the churches on current giving to the various programs of the district.
  • Solicit support for the basis work of ministry, nurture, and witness throughout the district and brotherhood.
  • Establish guidelines, make projections and provide consultation for the budget building process.
  • Evaluate, at least annually, the Christian Stewardship Counselor.
  • Note: District cares for the Mack Cemetery, located east of Waynesboro on Route 30. Turn south on Oller Avenue. Go about three blocks. Cemetery is on the right side of street. View One, View Two
