Sent by:Jordan  E-mail:Jester_h@yahoo.com

Notice: I apologize if this is an inappropriate question to be posted in this area. I was just visited by three members of the Old German Baptist Church who wanted some real estate information after they left I did a google in an attempt to find out more about this religion, which I had never heard of. As with most religions or denominations that I have tried to research online there does not seem to be adequate information regarding what your beliefs are or how they differ from that of other Christian faiths. I am very curious about different faiths and like to try to learn as much about all persons and there beliefs as possible. If someone could just send me some links where I can find this information, or a quick description or outline of the church I would really appreciate it. And again if this is an inappropriate place to ask this I am very sorry. Thank you for your time.

Sent by:Dennis Kingery  E-mail:dkingery_bbt@brethren.org
URL:http://www.cobcu.org
Notice:The Brethen Employees Credit Union has changed its name and charter.

The Brethren Benefit Trust has become the Credit Union's administrator and sponsoring agency, beginning April 1. This step was taken with the goal of increasing the Credit Union's services and membership.

“The approval of these changes voted on by the Credit Union's owners — its members — sets in place the foundation on which new services to more people within the Church of the Brethren can be built,” said Wil Nolen, BBT president. “We are excited about the future of the Credit Union and how it will positively impact the lives of Brethren members and employees in the years to come.”

The new name, Church of the Brethren Credit Union, reflects the change in charter, which greatly expands membership eligibility. Previously, the Credit Union had been open for all Church of the Brethren members and family members in Illinois and Wisconsin, and all Church of the Brethren pastors and staff of denominational agencies and organizations and their family members nationwide. Now all Church of the Brethren members and their families; all staff of denominational agencies and organizations and their families; and all congregations as institutional members can join.

Notice:The conference theme of Being Renewed Day by Day comes from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians in which he writes of treasure in clay jars. Paul explains how human frailty creates occasions where people can experience God’s transcendent power to enliven and renew. He writes that though our outer nature, our physical being, experiences difficulties and death, it is through hope in the power and availability of God’s grace that our inner nature, our spiritual being, can be renewed day by day.

The National Older Adult Conference is an excellent occasion for adults 50 years and older to experience renewal of their spirits, minds, bodies and hearts.

Celebrate with us the gift of God’s grace that makes us new creations in Jesus.

Sent by:Association of Brethren Caregivers  E-mail:abc@brethren.org
URL:http://www.brethren.org/abc/store
Notice:

The Association of Brethren Caregivers (ABC) is releasing "Taking Life," the final study guide in a series of end-of-life decision-making resources that the 1996 Annual Conference charged ABC to provide to the denomination.

Written by Grady Snyder, the study guide uses a biblical and Brethren context to explore the topics of fetal tissue, abortion, capital punishment, and war. Case studies and questions allow Sunday school classes, study groups, and families to explore end-of-life issues in a faith setting. The study guide is 12 pages and available for $2.50 from ABC.

Other study guides in the series include "A Study Guide on Unfulfilled Life and Premature Death," "A Study Guide on Aging and Life- Prolonging Technology," "Choosing Death with Dignity: A Study Guide on Death, Bereavement, and Burial," "Choosing Death: A Study Guide on Euthanasia," and "End-of-Life Decision-Making: Organ and Tissue Donation Annual Conference Statement and Study Guide." Each is available from ABC for $2.50. To order resources contact ABC, 1451 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120; 847-742-5100; e-mail abc@brethren.org; or go to www.brethren.org/abc/store.

Title:NCC offers reflection guide for "Passion of the Christ"  Contact:cobnews@aol.com
Sent by:COB News  E-mail:cobnews@aol.com
URL:http://www.ncccusa.org
Notice:A reflection guide to Mel Gibson's movie, The Passion of the Christ, is offered by the National Council of Churches (NCC) to help Christians think through issues raised by the film.

The Passion of the Christ opens Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, and already has generated both rave reviews and controversy. The NCC Interfaith Relations Commission, which issued the guide, does not comment on the film but rather offers Christian viewers a framework in which to see and discuss it. The guide is available on the NCC website www.ncccusa.org.

The guide recognizes that the story of Christ's Passion is deeply meaningful to Christians and that dramatic depictions can be a powerful experience of faith. Such depictions also have a tragic history, sometimes leading to the labeling of Jews as "Christ-killers" and to acts of violence against Jews. Many Christian and Jewish leaders are concerned that the movie might set back decades of Jewish-Christian relations, an NCC release said.

Addressing the question "Who killed Jesus?" the guide reminds readers that Jesus was born a Jew and lived as a Jew to the end. It encourages Christians to read at least two Gospel accounts of Christ's Passion along with commentary on the religious and political context of the gospels. Movie viewers are asked to discuss how the film portrays Jews, and to consider specific steps to build or strengthen relationships with Jewish people and institutions.
