Notice:Thanks for stopping in...

As we get established in the new combined Brethren Witness/Washington Office, it is a joy to welcome visitors. We have been fortunate to have friends come to spend time with us. It has been good to share with them as to the work of the Office, and to encourage our visitors to stay involved with the issues that we are challenged with as a faith community. It has also been good to be able to facilitate tours and congressional meetings for groups as requested.

Also stopping in have been different representatives from the many other religious working groups here on Capitol Hill. Our continued efforts as a voice for the faith community is important. We do not always agree completely on how the church should respond on issues, but we do agree that our strength will come from the involvement of members of our congregations. We often work together on sign-on letters, resource materials, and direct contact opportunities.

...and thanks for acting out!

It has been encouraging to receive feedback from many who have been acting out of your faith convictions in response to our Action-Alerts. There are others, Brethren acting out for others, acting out their convictions of faith. The Brethren Witness/Washington Office seeks to offer resources and opportunities for living out our commitment to areas of peace and justice. We welcome your input, your questions or concerns, your assistance, and your initiative in these efforts. Whether you stop by, or act out, we hope to hear from you.

Notice:Information about the VOS Fall Gathering:

It will be on the weekend of November 7-9, at the Best Western Hotel here in Elgin, Illinois. We began looking for a site months ago and had a bit of trouble finding one that would work for us. At first glance a hotel does not seem quite the place, but this one has a very large ballroom that can be divided into smaller sections. It has a large atrium where people can spread out when they are not in session. Everything is on one floor except the rooms, and they are on only two floors. Most of the rooms open into the atrium, so there is a feeling of being connected and being all in one place. (There is an indoor pool.) Transportation is easy from O'Hare and Midway. Despite some of the Brethren shifts in recent years, the wisdom of the late 19th century leaders who choose Elgin for its centrality and access to transportation still holds up. We really wanted to hold the fall gathering on the west coast but were not able to pull it off this year. We are already making plans to put next year's gathering in Oregon.

Notice:Time of Transition - No Time to Be Silent

Bob Dylan used the following words in one of his early recordings: Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call. Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall. For he that gets hurt, will be she who has stalled. There's a battle outside, and it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows, and rattle your walls. For the times they are a-changin'.

The history and story of any people is one of change. Dylan recorded his song to convey a message of concern and caution for a people and time that were indeed amidst many changes. In the song, Dylan also expressed words of hope and words of encouragement - "Come writers and critics, who prophesize with your pen, keep your eyes wide, the chance won't come again."

! Luke, another writer with similar concerns, recorded these words: "Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent." (Acts 18:9-10 NRSV)

Things in the Washington office are changing. We have a new name with the merging of the Brethren Witness program into our work. Amidst these changes, it is good to find in the gentle memory of a song, and in the hope filled writings of disciples, words that speak clearly to us. Amidst these changing times, it is the commitment of the Brethren Witness/Washington office to not be silent. We will continue to speak boldly from the statements, policies and directions given us by the church. The times are always changing. Our mission does not - to share the message of God's all encompassing love, and the teaching, healing, moving spirit of Christ's truth.

- Peace, Shalom, Salaam -
