Students March 13-16, 2003In the context of the War on Terrorism,
representatives from groups in the Church of the Brethren, Quaker, and
Mennonite traditions are planning "Organizing for Peace: Arts, Activism, and
Spirituality," a conference to be held March 13-16, 2003, in Richmond,
Indiana. Who is invited? Church members and leaders from Brethren, Mennonite,
and Quaker traditions; college and seminary students; parents; youth; artists,
dancers, musicians. The diversity of persons attending the gathering will
enhance our time together as we all share and learn from one another.
The weekend will provide time for intensive training in active nonviolence,
sessions on faith-based activism, and an exploration of how art and activism
are supported by our faith and spirituality. Time will also be spent in
spiritual direction, corporate worship, networking between students and church
leaders, prayer, and the use of various art forms as a tool for prophetic
messages in a time of war. There will be an attentiveness to the moving of the
Spirit, and together, we will build upon our spiritual resources for artful and
creative peacemaking. Bethany's Baker Peace Fund, Earlham School of Religion,
and On Earth Peace are sponsoring this event; and the Associated Mennonite
Biblical Seminary has pledged financial support for the gathering.
Conversations are being held about a collaboration with the three historic
peace church colleges: Earlham, Goshen, and Manchester.
The event will take place at West Richmond Friends Meeting, located
near Bethany Theological
Seminary, Earlham School of
Religion, and Earlham
College. |

| URL: | http://www.brethren.org/genbd/washofc/pubs/2002/NovDec02.pdf | | Notice: | What could they do? After the army
had forcibly taken their sons to train as new recruits in the country’s brutal
civil war, the mothers of the village cried “What can we do?” Then they banded
together. With their babies on their backs and small children in tow, they
traveled to the barracks where their young sons were being held. When they
arrived, the women laid their babies and toddlers at the feet of the soldiers
and proclaimed, “If you are going to take the children who have already been
suckled, you must now suckle these babies as well.” With that, they turned and
walked home. Baffled, the soldiers watched the women walk away even as the
babies cried. Hours later, realizing they couldn't send the babies home (they
did know where the children lived) the soldiers knew they had been
outmaneuvered. Ruefully, they ordered the new recruits to take their siblings
home, knowing (and hoping) they would see neither again. Moved by faith and
empowered by Jesus' example, people are acting even when it appears as though
the odds are long and the resources short. Nonviolent resistance is a viable
method to confront injustice and problem-solve, especially when coupled with
courage, ingenuity, and God's spirit. As I hear and see stories of how
Brethren are reacting to a possible war, the movement of this spirit is evident-
billboards are going up in Ohio, anti-war ads are being placed in newspapers,
no less than five CoB District Conferences as well as the General Board have
issued statements, response to congress has been as brisk as I've ever seen it,
and people young and old are taking to the streets to say “NO WAR!” There is
spirit of action and grace moving in our midst, even in the face of war. What
can you do? Greg Davidson Laszakovits, Washington Office Coordinator

| URL: | | | Notice: | Hi. My name is Lori Kirk. I have done search after search after search. For
churches in all states in the U.S, and I am sending prayer requests to everyone
I find, including links around the country! I am leaning on the power of prayer
for a miracle we need in our lives. My family and I are a family of 8. 6
siblings , 5 girls and 1 boy. Only one boy. This request is for him.
My brother is Staff Srgt. Rock Allbaugh, United States AF. In July, on July
20th to be exact, he collapsed at work, on Wright pt AFB in Dayton Oh. Within a
couple of hours, we found out he had a brain tumor. A large one, the size of a
golf ball. Directly behind his brain stem. After, several names and several
diagnosis, it was finalized as an Oligo-Astrocytoma, inoperable, malignant,
brain tumor. Treatment is to be, radiation (which he just finished) followed by
a year of chemo...worst case scenario, if all else failed, he would have a year
to live.
He's 27 years old, and has a 3 year old little girl, by the name of Ashley,
with spina bifida.
He has an MRI scheduled for Friday, November 15th, to see if the tumor has
shrunk. I am claiming Christ's promise that "by my stripes you ARE healed " for
my brother. And Hebrews 11:1-Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, a
conviction of things not seen. I know my God is so much bigger then this
tumor. I know it.
I need prayer warriors. Will you please stand in the gap with me, and pray for
my brother? For my mothers only son? For Ashley's daddy? For a child of the
High King? Pray there is no tumor. THERE is no tumor. On November 15th, there
is no tumor.
Thankyou! And Godbless you and your church! I know wonderful things are
happening there!
In Christ, Lori Kirk |

Toward a Brethren Philosophy of Higher Education
An interdisciplinary study conference for students, faculty,
administrative staff, and trustees of Brethren related colleges.
June 6 - 8, 2003
The conference will explore the dilemmas, challenges, and
opportunities that institutions of higher education
historically related to the Church of the Brethren face in
shaping their institutional mission for the twenty-first
century. Schools and colleges founded by Brethren have a rich
legacy of faith, academic integrity, and service to the
community. Yet, as the colleges matured they also became
increasingly independent from the denomination and their
character as distinctively Brethren institutions has changed.
How can these institutions shape an approach to higher
education that honors and preserves values from their past
while serving the needs of students in a religiously
pluralistic and multicultural world?
Proposals for papers, thematic presentations, workshops,
seminars, panel discussions are solicited from students,
alumni, faculty, administrative staff, and trustees. Topics
may cover a wide range of topics or issues.
Proposals should be no more than 2-3 double spaced pages
describing the paper or presentation. The deadline for
proposals is January 2, 2003

| URL: | | | Notice: | We’re looking for a senior couple/person who would appreciate
our old home, located in Rebersburg, Pennsylvania.
Located in quaint Brush Valley, travelers can find our ~1900
home by meandering through country villages, past Amish farms
and through picturesque fields and valleys. Our “town”
neighbors are Amish folk, English farmers and country
families. Come, relax on the enclosed front porch; listen to
and watch the passing clip-clop of Amish buggies-horses-farm
equipment.
Thirty minutes to Penn State/State College/Centre Community
Hospital, our home has a yard, apple trees, grape vines,
asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, wild flower bed, two car
garage, outbuildings and a huge vegetable garden (we offer
our rentor the availability to pick-your-own vegetables and
fruit from the backyard!)
The house (1st and 2nd floor can be heated individually):
1st floor: master bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, kitchen,
living room, enclosed front porch (can use nine months out of
the year), summer kitchen (with separate heating unit)
2nd floor: four bedrooms
My husband and I live directly behind the house; we would be
able to offer living assistance (such as lawn care, snow
removal, inside assistance, transportation to grocery
store). There are three Churches located in Rebersburg, two
small convenience stores, a bank, post office and garage.
No animals or smoking permitted in the house.
Rent is negotiable (depending on living assistance needed),
plus utilities.

| URL: | http://www.brethren.org/genbd/washofc/pubs/2002/MayJun02.pdf | | Notice: | Beyond Civility
To my dismay, a senior White House Official explained to me
that the US could not condemn the assassinations and large
scale destruction by the Israeli Government because the US
Government had just employed those very tactics in our “War
on Terror”. Israel was only following our model.
It seems that a dichotomy has developed between “civilized”
and “terrorist” tactics. Civilized war uses sophisticated
weapons. Politically and publicly, this type of war is seen
as reasonable. Uncivilized war throws rocks, straps dynamite
to bodies, and uses whatever means are available—it is known
as terrorism. Both schemes are indefensible as constructive
ways to achieve political gain or solve problems, and both
kill civilians. Yet it becomes dangerous to excuse one type
of warfare and demonize the other—and in this case
problematic as we not only create a divide between the rich
and the poor (with the rich always holding the higher
moral/civilized ground), we legitimize war and overlook that
which is inherently uncivilized: War itself.
This edition of Witness takes a look at the crisis in
the Middle East—not only at the disturbing and well-covered
happenings in Israel-Palestine, but the oft-ignored situation
between the US and Iraq. It also reviews Christian
Citizenship Seminar, during which we examined both Middle
Eastern hotspots. We wondered together where we fit as people
who are both Christians committed to peace, and citizens who
are sometimes horrified at our government’s “civilized”
actions, yet recognize our responsibility in a democracy. It
was not easy, but we looked beyond mere civility to the
gospel hope in the here and now, and what might make for
peace among all.

| Title: | New Annual Conference "Christ Alive" Presentation | Contact: | | | Sent by: | Jim Miner | E-mail: | j.miner@bigfoot.com |
| URL: | http://www.brethren.org/genbd/newsline/2002/jun0702.htm | | Notice: | Every year at Annual Conference a special event is planned for
Sunday afternoon. For the 2002 Conference in Louisville, Ky.,
a brand new program, "Christ Alive: The Story of the
Church," will be presented.
"There were a lot of ideas thrown about initially, but now
there is less of a focus on specific events and more material
centered on the nature of our denomination," said Frank
Ramirez, pastor of Elkhart (Ind.) Valley Church of the
Brethren.
Ramirez, along with Faith Church of the Brethren (Batavia,
Ill.) pastor Erin Matteson and New Carlisle (Ohio) pastor
Andrew Wright, was appointed by the Program and Arrangements
Committee to head the "Christ Alive" program. After years of
generally well-received General Board Live and Brethren
Ministries Live programs by Annual Conference agencies,
organizers felt that a change was needed this year.
"Christ Alive" will combine words, music, and video. It
features the voices of Jeff Copp, Tom Hostetler, and Myrna
Wheeler. The video was edited by David Sollenberger, music
programmed by Matteson, and words written by Ramirez. These
aspects will unite to form a program that reminds the
audience "Christ is alive in the Church of the Brethren and
that he has always been alive and present in the Church of
the Brethren," according to Ramirez.
On Sunday, June 30, "Christ Alive" will be presented from
1:55-3:15 p.m. during the first business session.

how varied the Brethren are and I was surprised that the
differences were usually slight variations in beliefs or forms

inviting
Brethren participation in a major "Colombia
Mobilization" event
April 19-22 in Washington, D.C., seeking to show

The four-day event, convened by School of the Americas

lobbying, and marches, culminating in nonviolent direct
action on the 22nd. The Washington Office is among those
endorsing the event, calling for an end to US military aid to
Colombia as part of a "war on drugs."
Other goals of the mobilization include expanded drug
treatment and prevention in the United States, promoting
sustainable economic development initiatives in Colombia and
elsewhere in the region, aiding refugees and others
internally displaced by the conflict, and making a personal
commitment to nonviolence. For more details on the
mobilization, visit the Washington Office website at

event will include a rally, a march to the US Capitol, and a
protest on the National Mall.

| URL: | http://www.brethren.org/genbd/washofc/pubs/2002/MarApr02.pdf | | Notice: | God Bless America? In the post Sept. 11 USA, one
cannot escape the ever-present proclamation “God Bless
America.” Scrawled in soap across car windows, in letters on
signs and placards, and reiterated time and again by
politicians and common folk alike, there is no escape. As a
US citizen I’ll proudly admit that I admire many of the
things my country practices and holds dear: a representative
democracy, freedom to worship, and separation of church and
state. Many across our globe do not enjoy a government with
these values. I feel fortunate to live in such a land. Yet,
is fortune the same as blessing? While fortune
implies a sense of luck, blessing seems to signify that God
has ordained the lop-sided geopolitics of our current
world. In “God Bless America” are we asking God to
bless those of us who live within these man-made borders
simply because we live in this geographic location? Or are we
hoping God will bless us because we do live here?
Perhaps we are demanding that God give us a special
blessing because we are more deserving than others? Maybe we
are affirming that because we are the richest and most
powerful country in the world today, that we have already
received God’s special blessing and now affirm that blessing.
Are we proclaiming that God has chosen us the new
Israel? To answer “yes” to any of these questions comes
dangerously close to undermining a central theme of Jesus’
ministry and revelation to the world-—that there is no single
chosen people, we all have access to God and God’s
blessings. As the US moves on I pray that our sobs of grief
are not further translated into the cry for war. God bless
America? God bless the world! Geg Davidson Laszakovitz,
Coordinator of Church of the Brethren Washington Office

May 24-26, 2002
Chicago, Illinois
"Seek the welfare of the city... for in its welfare
you will find your welfare." --Jeremiah 29:7
This conference provides a unique opportunity for young
adults to retreat to the city and seek God in an urban
environment, which is a switch from hosting YAC at Brethren
camps.
We'll be housed at the International Conference Center in
the area of Chicago called "uptown." "Uptown" is a diverse,
multi-cultural neighborhood on the north side.
On Saturday, we will go in small groups out to various
service projects in the city - soup kitchens, homeless
shelters, food pantries, etc. On Sunday, there will be a
variety of ethnic churches to choose from for attending
worship. Throughout the weekend, we will have inspiring
worship services and meaningful dialogue with urban speakers.
Take the urban plunge challenge and explore what it means
to "seek the welfare of the city."

Last year I wrote about how we as a country and
individuals had defiled one another in the just-resolved
presidential election in thought, word, and deed. And how all
had spent the Advent season waiting for a “just” resolution
from the Electoral College, then the Supreme Court. I made
the plea for all of us to see the bigger picture—December as
the season of Advent; God-with-us to be born again here and
now. Easier said than done. Again we find ourselves locked
in the quest for a “just” resolution. Yet, it has taken
grander proportions. This year it is not just for an election
victory, it is for a military victory. Advent has again seen
us spend our time and energies either on saluting war efforts
in Afghanistan, or in angry, self-loathe that our government
(and tax dollars) are used for that war. Both of these
afflictions, cheering war and anger, vanquished the Emmanuel
hope found in the season at hand. It was conventional
wisdom after Sept. 11 that “nothing will ever be the same,”
alluding to the notion that our feeling of security and
safety on US soil would be transformed to a cautious, wary-of-
strangers, land of panic. Yet somehow things are returning to
normal—Christmas shopping ploughed on as spending became our
patriotic duty, and insular-America successfully avoided the
questions of self-reflection regarding the terrorist
attacks. Perhaps I was naïve to have had different hopes
for “nothing being the same.” I hoped that violence would not
be the fall-back method of problem-solving. I prayed for
those of us who claim
ourselves as people of peace might find a response other
than, “I don’t really condone the war in Afghanistan, but
what else can we do?” I prayed for nothing less than miracle.
Oh wait, I guess that happened. “...and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace.” |
