Living Simply in a Complex World
Young Adult Retreat
January 5-7, 2001
FOR: Young adults, (approx. ages 18-35)
This is an opportunity to be with other young adults of
faith and conscience seeking ways to support one another
through tough questions of discipleship. This year we
explore what it means for each one of us to "live simply,"
seeking first the kingdom of God.
LEADERSHIP: Barbara Sayler, Co-director of On Earth Peace
Assembly with other invited guests.
TIME: 7 PM Friday, January 5th to 1:30 PM Sunday, January
7th
PLACE: Camp Eder: Fairfield, PA
COST: $59 for the weekend if registered by December 27, $5
late fee applies thereafter. $20 deposit. Limited number of
partial scholarships available on first-come, first served
basis.
THE THEME:
Seek First the Kingdom of God: Living Simply in a Complex
World
Getting away to God's woods will give you an opportunity to
reflect on life's priorities. This year's Retreat Theme looks
at the story of Paul's witness in Athens – a place filled
with statues to many gods (Acts 17:16-34) – and seeks to
understand how we can be witnesses amidst our own society of
so many gods. The theme includes Jesus' Sermon on the Mount
(Matt. 6:19-34) imploring us to understand how we can make
our lives faithful, simple and focused on seeking first God's
kingdom.

a full-time Youth Pastor.
Blue River is one of the more conservative congregations in
the Northern Indiana District, and we try to maintain faithful
adherence to the historic teachings of the Brethren, including
trine immersion baptism for all members, the full Love Feast,
the prayer veiling for services, modest dress, and lifetime
faithfulness in marriage. Our basic statement of faith is the
Brethren Card. We are seeking someone who will uphold and
model these understandings to our youth.
Our youth are energetic, and many have experienced short-term
missions trips over the past several years. They are seeking
to honor the Lord, and are in need of discipleship,
instruction in God's Word, and worthwhile Christian activity.
We are not interested in "baby-sitting" our youth, but in
challenging them to live for the Lord now.
We have an active Youth Steering Committee, and supportive

Hello, After many year's of trying to have a

Adoption. We have found a very good agency with lots of
children in the Kazakhstan,
Ukrainian area. These children
live in what we would consider appalling
condition's.Most of these children have been
in orphanage's since birth or there
shortly after... We desperately want to save just one of
the kid's from this horrible life
and at the same time start us and
them a family..The cost of this is astronomical .. The
total cost is going to run around
$20,000. And this is just fee's,
flight's and all the Governmental red tape, There's and
ours.. But this is a goal we
intend on reaching, We are asking
anyone who can help, To please do so, If not but a
dollar or two, Even your prayer's
will be greatly appreciated...If you
have any question's or would like info about use or the

accomplish this, Please write,email or

us that will also be greatly
appreciated.. At the bottom of this page

| URL: | | | Notice: | The Children's Aid Society/Southern PA District Church of
the Brethren is holding its fourth annual golf tournament
July 21 near Abbottstown, about 10 miles east of Gettysburg.
The tournament is a major fund-raiser and focuses on fun as
much as funds! The money raised helps subsidize counseling
services for children who could not afford it otherwise.
We are looking for golfers, individual sponsors and corporate
support. For more information, email or call 717-624-4461. |

| URL: | | | Notice: | The purpose for our mission trips are to expose
pastors to what is happening in other parts of the world and
to
hopefully, prayerfully see a vision for World Missions
birthed in
their hearts. We also would like to plant disciple-making,
world
missions minded, reproducing churches in Africa, Asia and
Europe as
well as equipping and training the indigenous Christian
leadership!
We also would like to participate in relieving the suffering
in the
nations we go to even as Jesus relieved suffering in His
earthly
ministry.
Touch International's vision is to be a World Missions
networking/mobilizing/training center that plants world
missions
minded, discipling, reproducing churches throughout Africa,
Asia, the
10/40 window and the world!
The key thing to keep in mind is that our main ( by all means
NOT our
ONLY target group) target group is
African-American pastors, churches and Christian leaders.
Please let
anyone you know who you think may be interested in networking
with us
and/or supporting such an endeavor. As I said I know many
other
groups have been trying to accomplish such a task but to no
avail, I
really sense that Touch is on to something big!! Even the
USCWM is
looking for someone to head up their efforts to mobilize
African-
American churches for World Missions, to date they have NOT
found
anyone yet! Being AA myself I know very well that it is
DIFFICULT to
get many AA pastors to see the GLOBAL aspect of the Great
Commission.
Everyone we have
told about Touch has been very positive about what we are
attempting
to do. From now to the end of the year we have several
regional
meetings (to introduce Touch International to local pastors)1
missions trip in October and a World Missions conference
scheduled
for the end
of August. to be contd |

| URL: | | | Notice: | Hello all!! Just to let everyone
know, there is a new World Missions organization of which I'm
the VP
of that was birthed
called Touch International. Touch International is seeking to
mobilize churches for
World Missions, especially churches that are predominantly
African-
American.I am trying to get the word out to as many World
Missions
minded groups as I can. To date (the organization was
incorporated in
April of this year)there are over half a dozen pastors
involved with
the number growing monthly! We are seeking an office location
in the
Raleigh, NC area and hope to have one before the year is out.
Our
website should be up and running in the not too distant
future. You
can keep checking @ www.touchinternational.org or.com I
will send
you more information on Touch in the near future thru snail
mail if
you like. I truly believe we are right in the middle of the
will of
God with this organization. So many organizations are seeking
to
mobilize African-American churches for World Missions (9.9
times out
of 10 caucasian)but to no avail. It is time for Christians of
African-
American descent to take on our portion of the global
responsibility!
It is really a shame that LESS than 1% of the missionary
force world
wide is made up of African-American missionaries! We have
really been
slack in this area, but Touch International is seeking to
change
this. Please pray for us. I will keep you abreast of what is
happening with us. We do have a short term missions trip
planned for
October to Togo. to be cont'd |

| URL: | | | Notice: | The church we are attending used to be a Baptist church. We
have been in the process of changing our bylaws/church. We
have become an elder-led fellowship. While learning about
Biblical Eldership on the web the "plymouth brethren" kept
coming up. I remembered that my mother, grandmother and I
used to attend the Church of the Brethren when I was a little
girl. Something happened and the church closed. This was
around 1965. I'm very interested in learning about the
brethren: what they believe, etc. What I've read about
"plymouth brethren" sounds pretty neat. I would love to
coorespond with other women who would be willing to answer
some questions. Look forward to getting to know other
believers!

| URL: | | | Notice: | In reading the section of Merle Rummel's article on the
Obannon Settlement, he mentions Daniel Miller and his
brothers.
My great, great, great, grandfather was Daniel Miller. His
son, Daniel Miller Jr was born 29 Mar 1802 in Ramsley, Va.
He had several sons, four of whom were Brethern ministers.
They were George, William, Daniel, and Merratt. I believe
George pastored a church in Iowa, and one of time pastor at
the Auglaize Church in Auglaize township, Allen County, Ohio.
I am trying to determine whether or not if this Daniel
Miller, and his son Daniel Miller Jr. may have been the
Daniel Miller Mr. Rummel referred to in his historical
article or if your organization has any record on this four
brothers who were Brethern ministers. |

| URL: | | | Notice: | I an trying to locate my gguncle, Andrew K. Root, he was
called "Kay", and he was a Church of the Brethern Minister,
born 1849 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, probably in or
near Oil City as his father Emor/Emir Root farmed in the area.
His mother was Nancy Kerr, born in Penns also as well as
sister, Jane, Harriet, and himself. I do not know which
branch of Church of the Brethern that he was affiliated with.
He came to Belpre, Kansas in about 1886-1890 to perform the
wedding ceremony for his sister, Harriet Herring's two
daughter. He had 2 halfbrothers, from his father's previous
marriage, William Frank Root and Edward Root as well as a
sister Julia Root. These 3 children were born in NY State as
well as their father, Emor Root b. 1806. Where the family
went after Crawford County, Penns, I do not know. I would
like very much to find information on Rev. Andrew K. Root the
minister or any of his family. His sister Harriet, I have
information on, as she and her husband George W. Herring went
from Penns to Kans and then to Los Angeles, Calif area where
they lived out their days. Any information on the rest of
this family would be appreciated. Thank you. Colleen Yates,

| URL: | http://www.geocities.com/ellynhartzler | | Notice: | In January, 1999, I went with the work-campers to EYN
Headquarters in Mubi, primarily to find stories, interview
people, and get a 'feel' of the land, related to the work of
MARGUERITE and HOMER BURKE, the firstCOB medical missionaries
to go to Nigeria in 1924. My extended family arranged this
trip for the express purpose of having the Burke's story
chronicled and published.
In the short time there I was able to find people who lived
with, were trained by, or worked with, these servants of God,
and since returning have interviewed missionaries who served
with them in Nigeria and in Puerto Rico. It's my hope to
find others who will share stories of their experiences.

| URL: | | | Notice: | On April 15, 2000, First Mennonite Church of Richmond,
Virginia will be sponsoring the second annual Hymn Sing For
Peace. Persons from all denominations are invited to attend
this event as an attempt to provide a proactive and positive
response to all violent conflict.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "The Church is not the
master of the state, nor the servant of the state, but the
conscience of the state." The spirit of this event will be
one of witness to the collective conscience of the
government, to those watching, and to those participating
that there are many creative ways to solve conflict rather
than with violence. The message is that this is our way of
best experiencing and demonstrating Peace, by singing hymns
of praise to our God. This is also meant to provide an
alternative voice to some of the secular-style demonstrations
which can tend to rely on negativity in speaking out against
injustices, and sometimes add to the conflict.
Everyone is invited to come and meet for singing at the
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Steps. Singing will begin
at 4:00 PM and end around 5:30 PM. It will consist primarily
of group singing of hymns familiar across denominational
lines. Music books will be provided. Participants will also
be provided leaflets to hand out to curious pedestrians,
explaining our purpose and providing suggestions of how we as
individuals and nations can promote peace around us. In
addition, a letter will be sent to the President explaining
our actions.
Participants are encouraged to stay and picnic together on
the Mall area, after the singing. For planning purposes,
congregations and individuals are asked to RSVP with the
numbers of expected participants to First Mennonite Church at
(804) 359-1340 or E-Mail at ecopow@erols.com.
