Disaster Response

“Thou shalt open thine hand wide onto thy brother, to thy poor and to thy needy in thy land,” Deuteronomy 15:11.

The Shenandoah District Church of the Brethren first organized the auction 15 years ago as a way to raise money for the Disaster Relief Fund, which provides immediate supplies, rebuilding tools and labor to disaster areas. In the past, aid has been sent to the Gulf Coast region, to local communities who've suffered tornadoes, hurricanes and floods; and even to locations abroad, helping people around the world recover from earthquakes, tsunamis and other disasters.

In 2006, In 2006, Brethren volunteers traveled to Pensacola, Florida; Luceadale and McComb, Mississippi; and Pearl River, Louisiana to help in rebuilding efforts after recent hurricanes. Disaster fund allocations also were sent to assist the draught in Kenya, the Philippines after a major landslide, Palestinian medical support, and much more.

Auction

The 15th annual Disaster Response Auction will be held May 18-19, 2007 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, Va.

The success of each auction is a main reason why the Shenandoah District is able to provide such an enormous amount of outreach. The auction transforms the Rockingham County Fairgrounds into a showcase of our community's generosity and talent, as thousands of people arrive for the sale and the chance to browse through the handcrafted items. One side of the exhibit building is filled with solid wood furniture, wall-hangings, toys and other crafts. Quilts are hung clothesline-style and invite guests to meander through their waves of beautiful colors and designs. The other half of the building allows people the opportunity to purchase baked goods and plants, as well as enjoy fellowship over the country ham and oyster buffet.
